Is it possible that Donna actually adds something to the Sing Me Back Home?

That and high time are two of the songs I actually enjoy her contribution. Phil sounds like shit too but you don't see as much complaining about his singing...there is a difference between liking someone's voice and the shit that she would pull during gset and playing, that was just unnecessary.

the term "caterwauling" comes to mind:

1. to utter long wailing cries, as cats in rutting time.
2. to utter a similar sound; howl or screech.
3. to quarrel like cats.
–noun Also, cat·er·waul·ing.
4. the cry of a cat in rutting time.
5. any similar sound.

LoL - See thread- Was Donna THAT bad?

I asked about her a couple weeks back and surprisingly the census seemed to be split, but similar. I think most people believe she had her moments (especially pre- 75) that she really added to the band and certain songs - and other times (mostly post 75) that she definitly murdered songs. there are versions of TLEO you can find that she and Jer sound like they were made to sing that tune together. But then there are versions that would make your skin crawl.

If i were you I would just go back in time a lil and treat yourself to something nice like this lil beauty here from April of 71 http://www.archive.org/details/gd71-04-13.sbd.unknown.32015.sbeok.flacf
thats some gooood stuff right there=)

And, I will reiterate what I said there....

Donna definitely had her nice moments with Grateful Dead. She also had her cacophonous atrocities, though many of those were Bobby-Donna screech-fests.

That is very true. While many of us (myself included) devote much time to pointing out the brain-melting atrocities of the aforementioned Donna, rarely is Bob singeled out for his occasional "contributions" to cacaphonic blow-outs. Or, as a good friend said, doing a spot-on imitation of an overly caffeinated Howler Monkey. There are many times during Estimated or a Looks Like Rain where I wish Jerry would just walk up to Bob and smack him, saying "OK, we get it: you're a very sensitive guy who must wail his soul to the heavens. But, please, you're scaring the small children"

Forgive me SDH - you're acknowledged as a GD Internet Archive forum 'fountain of knowledge' so, if I disagree I get this uneasy feeling that in the cold light of day you'll be right and I'll be wrong, but:-

Wasn't Bob Weir a founding member of the Dead?
Wasn't he (viz his guitar, vocal and song-writing contributions) a cornerstone of the Dead?
Didn't he earn his passage, earn the right to let off (vocal) steam during the final crescendos of certain (suitable) blow-outs (not all)?

"Even a blind man can tell when the sun is shining".

But Donna - apart from being Mrs Godchaux, what did she bring to the Dead? i.e. If not for being Mrs Godchaux, would she have got the gig in her own right?

Sorry SDH - can't remember who penned the 'RBD' tla, but he was 'dead' right.

But Bob - why did you have to do 'it'? Just because you could or was it 'cos you'd got bored with all those California blonde beach babes?

Well, as you said, I have grown tired of the brainless beach babes. Too much of everything IS enough.

As for Bob, let me be clear that in no way am I equating his occasional trips into sonic meltdowns to those of Donna's. She holds the crown and will never be unseated. I was only pointing out that she wasn't the only one who could make my lunch attempt to climb back up my esophagus. But Bob only does this occasionally and with no where near the power of the Master. Just trying to be fair. But, as in all things I post here, it is only my opinion and based on what my brain, and my brain only, reacts to.

I agree with User Known, of course she can add to Sing me back song or "almost" any song (leave the PITB's, Scarlets and GSET's out of this). She has a very pleasant voice and can harmonize quite well.

I saw her with the Tricksters and had a great time.
